Idyllwild first was the summer home for the Cahuilla Indians, who flocked to this area to escape the summer heat. A legend from this Indian culture talks about how the tribesmen chanted over the body of their chieftain Tahquitz, or Takwish, who had killed his love while possessed by an evil spirit. During the chanting, his body began to glow. His body then rose and settled on what is now known as Tahquitz Rock. The Cahuilla Indians say that the chieftain is held under the rock with a rattlesnake and a condor. When the mountain trembles, legend says it is not an earthquake, but Tahquitz up to mischief on Lily Rock.

Idyllwild was once called “Strawberry Valley” due to the wild strawberries that grew along the creek called Strawberry Creek. Shepherds were regular visitors of the valley, and the Domenigoni Family of San Jacinto Valley visited this site often. In the early 1880s, they began homesteading land in this area, which would eventually become the Idyllwild Arts Academy. A toll road was built from Hemet in 1876 which opened up Idyllwild to settlement, logging and tourism. Loggers eliminated much of the forest area between 1876 and 1901, giving this area more space. George and Sarah Hannahs established a Camp Idylwilde at the village center near Strawberry Creek. The couple later built a post office at the lower valley in 1893, which was called “Rayneta,” after their children, Raymond and Henrieta.
Idyllwild was given its official name in 1901. It was also in this year that the Idyllwild Sanatorium, used to house and treat tuberculosis patients, was built. After it was burned down, it was rebuilt as a hotel, called “Idyllwild among the Pines.” This resort name was later simplified to Idyllwild.
